Anthropic’s Valuation Surge Creates Billions in Windfalls for Early Backers

Investors who joined the AI lab at various stages now hold stakes worth billions, setting the stage for a historic public market debut.

The anticipation surrounding Anthropic’s imminent public listing has created a distinct tension between the company’s current private valuation and the projected windfall for its investors. While the startup is expected to go public later this year at a valuation potentially reaching $2 trillion, the financial rewards for its backers have already materialized at a substantial scale. Even before the official debut, the stakes held by venture capitalists and early supporters are worth billions at the firm’s latest private market price of $965 billion, according to data reported by Bloomberg.

The disparity in entry points illustrates the varying degrees of upside captured by different groups. Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, is among the most prominent beneficiaries of the earlier phase. He participated in the 2021 Series A round when the company was valued at just $461 million, according to PitchBook. Today, his approximately 1% ownership stake is valued at nearly $10 billion, a figure that reflects the massive appreciation since his initial investment.

Later-stage investors have also seen significant returns, though their entry prices were considerably higher. Iconiq, an investment firm, issued a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year when the valuation stood at $183 billion. This late-stage position is currently worth $17 billion, with the potential to double upon the company’s entry into the public markets. Similarly, Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D round, has invested more than $1 billion over time, resulting in a stake now valued at $14 billion.

More recent entrants have also secured substantial gains, underscoring the rapid pace of the AI sector’s growth. Sequoia, a well-known venture capital firm, first backed Anthropic earlier this year when the valuation had already reached $380 billion. Its $3 billion investment granted it roughly 1% ownership, meaning the firm has already more than doubled its initial capital. This performance highlights how even high-valuation entry points can yield robust returns in the current market environment.

Other notable participants include Sound Ventures, a firm co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher. The company invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round and subsequently added $400 million, accumulating a stake worth billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher departed Sound Ventures this year to establish a new venture capital firm. Meanwhile, Spark Capital, the only known venture firm holding a board seat, has seen its $75 million investment from the 2023 Series C round balloon more than ninetyfold to $7 billion.

These figures suggest that the upcoming IPO will not only be a milestone for Anthropic but also a definitive event for the venture capital industry. The sheer scale of the returns, ranging from nearly $10 billion for early angels to billions for late-stage giants, indicates that the AI boom has created an unprecedented level of wealth concentration among a select group of investors. As the public listing approaches, these stakes will serve as a benchmark for the broader market’s appetite for high-growth technology firms.
